Valve has started to integrate a built-in game recording system into the Steam platform. The new feature allows players to record game footage without using additional software. The company has currently opened the system to beta users.
Steam's new tool offers functions such as continuous recording in the background, manual clip creation, and event marking. Valve states that it is trying to keep the impact of recordings on performance low.
What has changed?
The new system is directly integrated into the Steam client. Players can now create short videos without the need for third-party tools like OBS or NVIDIA ShadowPlay.
According to information shared by Valve, the system offers three core modes:
- Background recording — continuously records while playing.
- On-demand recording — users start manually.
- Event marking — provides quick access to specific moments.
The company has also prepared special tools for developers. Game studios can add automatic marking during achievements or significant scenes. This way, players can find specific moments more easily.
According to Valve's official statement, the recording system will work on both desktop and Steam Deck.
Why is it important?
The habit of recording in PC gaming has grown significantly over the past five years. Platforms like Twitch, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts have made short game clips one of the main content formats.
Until now, the majority of players were using three different solutions:
- OBS Studio
- NVIDIA ShadowPlay
- AMD Radeon ReLive
Valve's addition of a recording system directly into Steam could reduce some use cases for these tools. The process is simplified, especially for users without technical knowledge.
The critical point here is different: Valve no longer wants to be just a game store. The company is transforming Steam into a platform that manages the entire daily flow of the player. Chat, streaming, mod management, and the recording system are all integrated within the same application.
This could be even more significant on the Steam Deck side. Portable device users often avoid additional recording software due to low processing power. The built-in solution could provide a more controlled structure in terms of performance.
Comparison
| Feature | Steam Recording | OBS Studio | ShadowPlay |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-app usage | yes | no | partially |
| Background recording | yes | manual setup | yes |
| Steam Deck support | yes | limited | no |
| Additional software requirement | no | yes | NVIDIA GPU required |
Valve has not yet shared the full release date for the system. However, it is expected that the feature will be made available to all users later this year after the beta process.
Competition in PC gaming is no longer just about the game catalog. Platforms are trying to keep the player's entire behavior in front of the screen within their ecosystem. Steam's new move is directly part of this change.
